Dr. Gordon Norton was born in lndiana but moved to St. Petersburg, Florida as a child. He graduated with a B.A. degree (Magna cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Vanderbilt Uni. in 1960. While at Vanderbilt Dr. Norton enjoyed playing varsity baseball all four years and was awarded the Grantland Rice Award given to the outstanding senior in athletics and scholarship. Dr. Norton graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry in 1964, served as a dentist in the U.S. Army the following two years ( Vietnam veteran), and returned to Emory to earn his Masters of Science in Periodontics in 1968.
Dr. Norton has been practicing periodontics in St. Petersburg since 1968. His professional affiliations both past and present include but are not limited to the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, Florida Association of Periodontists (past president), Southern Academy of Periodontology, Southern Academy of Clinical Nutrition, American College of Dentists, lnternational College of Dentists, Florida Dental Association, West Coast Dental Association, Pinellas County Dental Association (past president). He is the recipient of the J. Leon Schwartz Lifetime Service Award (highest award given by the Florida Dental Association). He has taught Periodontics at the St. Petersburg College Dental Hygiene School and been a consultant in Periodontics at the Bay Pines Veterans Administration Hospital.
Dr. Norton’s civic involvement is exceptionally outstanding. He has served continuously for over 42 years on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army (past president), been a Rotarian for 48 years (past president), served in nearly all leadership positions continuously in his church and taught classes for over 30 years, been a discussion leader in Bible Study Fellowship, and served as an officer and/or member of the St. Petersburg Young Life organization, President’s Council at Florida Southern College, Ethics Advisory Council for St. Petersburg Junior College, Louise Graham Regeneration Center, Gideons, and many other local volunteer activities. He has been honored as the Volunteer ofthe Year by the Salvation Army and has received the Key to St. Petersburg by the mayor of St. Petersburg.
Dr. Norton has been married to Kay, his wife, for 46 wonderful years. They have two children and six grandchildren. Dr. Norton’s hobbies include sports, reading, and gardening.
